Two new floors come online at Telehouse South as data centre upgrade continues

Floors six and seven of Telehouse’s data centre in London offer up to 5.4MW of total IT power capacity.

Telehouse International Corporation of Europe has opened two additional floors at its Telehouse South data centre in London Docklands. Available from this month, floors six and seven will each provide up to 2.7MW of peak IT load.

The news follows Telehouse’s previous announcement of a significant update to the refurbishment of Telehouse South in October 2023, where multinational construction and development company, Skanska, was appointed as the contractor. Today’s milestone reflects Telehouse’s ongoing commitment to grow within its existing estate and support the increasing customer demand for secure and resilient colocation services.

First opened in 2022, Telehouse South is set to provide a maximum of up to 18MW of IT power capacity, over 4,000 racks across the building on full development. Strategically located near the City and Canary Wharf, Telehouse South is ideally positioned to serve businesses looking for low-latency connectivity to London’s financial district.

A network of 7,000 dark fibres, across two diverse routes, each boasting over 3,000 single-mode dark fibres, interconnects Telehouse South with the existing four data centres at the Telehouse London Docklands Campus. This enables unrivalled connectivity to a diverse ecosystem of over 1,000 partners, including leading internet exchanges, major cloud service providers, internet service providers, application service providers, and content service providers.

The eleven-story building is Telehouse’s most ambitious infrastructural and aesthetic refurbishment to date, prioritising sustainability and reducing environmental impact in building designs. Like all Telehouse facilities in London Docklands, Telehouse South is powered solely by 100% renewable energy procured from certified wind, solar, biomass and hydro generators.

As part of ongoing extensive improvements to enhance operational excellence and customer experience, Telehouse South will see the installation of a new intelligent control system. This system will enhance efficiency, reduce energy consumption and improve the power usage efficiency (PUE) of the building by effectively monitoring, analysing, and optimising cooling temperatures within the facility.

The cooling system in Telehouse South will use higher water temperatures to operate more efficiently. This approach will not only reduce the system’s power demand but also enable the building’s new Free Cooling Chillers to use the UK’s usual ambient temperatures for low-carbon heat rejection all year round. The system does not use water for adiabatic cooling, eliminating reliance on natural resources and delivering a low water usage efficiency (WUE) for the building.

Additionally, Telehouse plans to recycle waste heat from the system, providing low-carbon heating to nearby homes and businesses as well as other areas within the Telehouse South building.

Mark Pestridge, Executive Vice President & General Manager at Telehouse Europe says: “The opening of two additional floors at Telehouse South marks another significant milestone in our ongoing commitment to meeting the capacity demands of the market and providing unrivalled connectivity services. As businesses continue to navigate the complexities of digital transformation, Telehouse remains dedicated to delivering secure, resilient, and sustainable infrastructure solutions that empower our customers to thrive in today's dynamic environment, while meeting their scalability and connectivity needs of tomorrow. Organisations are rapidly adopting AI and cloud services, therefore we’re actively exploring opportunities to leverage the global expertise of our parent company, KDDI, to meet the growing demand for AI-ready data centre infrastructure.”
