Civica has won a new five-year contract with Chesterfield Royal Hospital NHS Foundation Trust to implement its cloud-enabled digital health platform Cito.

The Trust will use Cito, Civica’s electronic document management system (EDMS) and clinical information management system, to support its digital strategy – integrating more than 30 existing clinical systems into a single ‘Electronic Version of Truth’.

This digital integration will ultimately replace the need for paper case notes; clinicians will be able to access all the information needed to deliver improved patient care via electronic information provided by the Cito software.

Established as an NHS Foundation Trust in 2005, Chesterfield Royal Hospital serves the wider North Derbyshire population of around 420,000 people. The Trust employs over 3,900 people and provides a full range of acute services, plus 24-hour accident and emergency care, community midwifery and specialist children’s services along with two GP and primary care practices.  Over the past ten years,  the Trust has invested more than £120m in new services, technology and facilities.

Chesterfield Royal Hospital is a longstanding partner of Civica’s, using its EDMS WinDIP since 2012 to progress the digitisation of paper records and support the Trust’s paperless 2020 agenda. This major new upgrade and full migration to Cito will deliver on the wider digital IT strategy to create a centralised store of electronic information and reduce reliance on paper case notes.

Cito enables a real-time single view of patients by unifying clinical data and helps users to access critical information any time, via any device. Scalable and flexible to meet the Trust’s current and future needs, the single sign-on interface enhances security across all facilities while removing any need for advanced training for clinical employees.

By enabling access to patient records and the transfer of essential information between the Trust and its healthcare partners, clinicians can gather insights and information along the patient’s care pathway immediately. This will deliver real-time access to critical information at the point of care, and improve outcomes for patients.

The Cito eReferral Service API will also be used to take electronic output of GP referral letters and supporting information directly – removing the need to print and scan the documents. Via its workflow capability, Cito will enable clinicians to scrutinise and triage incoming patient referrals quickly and effectively.

Ian Hazel, Associate Director of ICT and Patient Records at Chesterfield Royal Hospital NHS Foundation Trust commented: “As a major NHS Trust, our vision is to be a first-class provider of sustainable healthcare services, delivering the best possible care to our patients. By upgrading to Civica’s Cito system, we are progressing on the digital transformation of our services, reducing errors with an accurate single-view of a patient’s care record, whilst speeding up services to enhance care.”

David Roots, Executive Director, Health & Care, Civica, commented: “We’re delighted to continue our partnership with Chesterfield Royal Hospital through migration to our cloud-based Cito platform. Cito will support the Trust’s vision to deliver paperless services at the point of care, drive digital transformation and ultimately enhance patient care. We are looking forward to continuing our work with the Trust in the future to provide innovative technology solutions to meet its evolving digital requirements.”
