Zen Internet awarded EU Code of Conduct for Data Centres Award 2014

Zen Internet, one of the UK’s leading independent Internet Service Providers (ISP), has been awarded the European Commission’s EU Code of Conduct for Data Centres Award 2014.

The award presented by the European Commission is in recognition of the efficiency improvements made to Zen’s Data Centre at its North West headquarters.
All four of Zen’s directly owned and managed Data Centres have Participant status in the EU Code of Conduct. The Data Centres, three of which are located in Greater Manchester and one in Leeds, provide a cost-effective way of securely hosting customers’ mission critical IT infrastructure, together with providing reliable and fast Internet access for Internet or Intranet services.

The EU Code of Conduct has been created in response to increasing energy consumption in data centres and the need to reduce the related environmental, economic and energy supply security impacts.

The aim is to inform and stimulate data centre operators and owners to reduce energy consumption in a cost-effective manner without hampering the mission critical function of data centres. The Code of Conduct aims to achieve this by improving understanding of energy demand within the data centre, raising awareness, and recommending energy efficient best practice and targets.

“We are honoured to win this award in recognition of efficiency improvements made in our Data Centre as a Participant in the EU Code of Conduct. It’s a testament to the work of all those involved and we look forward to achieving further improvements as we deliver on our future commitments,” said Richard Tang, Managing Director.
“Adhering to the Code guidelines allows us to better manage energy utilisation within our Data Centres, which enables us to better control our costs and in turn offer better priced hosting products and services to our customers,” added Richard.

Zen has recently expanded one of its Greater Manchester Data Centres due to increasing customer demand for its hosting services. The Data Centre has gone from strength to strength since its opening 18 months ago and capacity is such that the first phase is now full. The Data Centre now comprises of 8 halls. Planning for further expansion is already underway and will eventually deliver a further two halls.

This further expansion forms part of Zen’s £4m investment in its Data Centres and provides additional capacity for Zen’s growing hosting portfolio including; Managed Hosting and Managed Cloud Hosting. Zen is also offering state of the art Co-location from only £59 per month. Other investments have included two state of the art Diesel Rotary Uninterruptible Power Supplies (DRUPS) that provide a greener standby power solution.

Zen’s Data Centre expansion forms part of its continuous infrastructure development which also includes significant investment in major developments of its next generation network. Over £3.5m has been made in Zen’s core infrastructure to build a network of local exchange Points of Presence (PoPs). Zen’s 200 PoPs plus another 270 exchange locations will enable it to provide services to at least 6 million UK premises.

For customers who want their own data centre, but without the associated costs and overheads of having to build, manage and maintain their own environment, Zen’s Private Suites give customers the opportunity to create a tailored data centre space to suit their individual business requirements. A Private Suite provides an additional tier of security and greater flexibility for customers looking to collocate larger quantities of equipment across multiple racks.
