Software-defined networking (SDN) has been hyped for years, but today many signs point toward one conclusion—it has finally arrived. Microsoft just announced that SDN will be a core feature of the much-anticipated Server 2019 release. There is also word from VMWare—call it a pre-announcement announcement—that the company plans to use an SDN-based strategy to take on Cisco on its own networking turf.
